Surf's Up In Port A
By Suzette @ 4:08 PM :: 684 Views :: 0 Comments :: :: Local

Port Aransans woke up to a bright sunny day  this morning and large waves rolling in on local beaches.

The surf is up in Port A!  A multitude of surfers have descended upon the island to enjoy some of the best surfing waves of the season.

Beach goers have plenty to watch from kids on skim boards to "old dudes" on long boards and every type of board in between as they paddle out to catch a wave.

The sets continue to roll in as Gustav makes its way inland from the Gulf.  Professional area surfers rate the waves from very good to excellent and expect the conditions to hold through tomorrow.  The waves known as  ground swells are not a result of wind, but are being created by low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico.

Currents are flowing from north to south causing large swells to curl perfeclty for long rides.  Miles and miles of sandy beaches make Mustang Island a surfer's paradise.  Beware though, surf of this type is NOT for the inexperienced and those who do not know how to navigate the currents and heavy surf should stay on the beach and watch.

It is amazingly beautiful to sit back and watch the power of Mother Nature.  Port Aransas is a great place to experience such a wonder. For a live view click here.

Did you know?
Port Aransas, Mustang Island and Corpus Christi are famous for Kiteboarding

Corpus Christi is home to some of the windiest conditions in the U.S., especially along the Gulf of Mexico.

Most kiteboarders in the Coastal Bend kite year-round, but there are some distinct seasons and wind patterns throughout the year.

From late September to early May, cold fronts sweep through the Coastal Bend allowing for some great kiting at several spots along the Bay and in the Gulf.

Winds range form 20-40mph from the N-NE-NW, with water temperatures from 58 to 75 degrees. Following a cold front, there areusually several days of calm before the prevailing SE wind returns.

From March through mid-August, Corpus Christi offers some of the best conditions for kiteboarding as winds become S-SE and vary in strength from 15-25 or more. This wind pattern allows for great kiting conditions for all abilities.
